About the Author
Sue Rabbitt Roff represented human rights organizations at the United
Nations in New York throughout the 1980s, with particular reference to
peace and security issues in small states and territories. Since 1991 she has
been teaching social sciences and medical sociology at Dundee University
Medical School, including courses on Health Hazards of Ionising Radiation
and Organophosphate-based Pesticides. Her interest in the health hazards
of nuclear weapons was probably aroused by growing up in Australia in the
1950s and 1960s. In the 1970s she met many Palauans and Marshallese and
became aware of the impact of the United States nuclear tests on their
health and reproductive outcomes. She is currently studying the health
status of members of British Nuclear Tests Veterans Association on a Senior
Research Fellowship funded by the late Dame Catherine Cookson
Foundation. Her publications include Overreaching in Paradise: US Policy
in Palau since 1945 (Juneau, AK: Denali Press, 1990); Timor's Anschluss:
Indonesian and Australian Policies in East Timor 1974-76 (Lampeter:
Edwin Mellen Press, 1992) and Hotspots: The Legacy of Hiroshima and
Nagasaki (London and New York: Cassell, 1995).
