Press Release - 15 September 2002

Nuclear Veterans Day
3 October 2002

This is the 50th anniversary of our country entering the Nuclear Age.

On 3rd October 1952 Britain became a nuclear power alongside the USA and the then USSR.

On 3rd October 1952 Britain exploded its first experimental Nuclear Bomb at the Monte Bello Island of the North West Coast of Australia.

To commemorate this historic occasion the British Nuclear Test Veterans Association is holding a number of ceremonies in various parts of the country.

These ceremonies are to honour the men, both ex-servicemen and civilians, plus the families of those men who have subsequently died because of their involvement in this memorable event, of which Margaret Thatcher in 1992 said was responsible for keeping the peace for 40 years.

It is now fifty years and because of our Nuclear Veterans we are fortunate to still have that peace.

In the name of the 'Justice that we Seek' we designate this day - 3 October 2002 - as Nuclear Veterans Day
